Setting a goal is an easy task but maintaining to effectively achieve that goal can be challenging. Organization behavior is a course that will give me a clear understanding about business environment and employees behaviors. My family has an exporting goods business back in Vietnam and I hope to take on my family business in the near future. As a future business person, I need to comprehend about the business environment in order to run my family business. A goal I hope to accomplish for this class is to be able to answer two questions. Do I have the ability to become a great leader? Can I work well with other teammates to accomplish a goal as a team? In any kind of business, each employee has his or her own working style. Becoming a leader, I need to understand about individual or groups behave; what each employee coordinates best and what an employee struggles to perform. From then, I will able to manage and communicate in different ways to motivate my employees so they can perform effectively. Learning the concepts of ethic and unethical in business is critical; I strongly believe if I am able to recognize and I can address any unethical practices among others. Accordingly, my employees can see that the business environment they work for offers them a fair working condition and they will create an honest reputation throughout the organization. Creating a friendly working environment can help to increase the productivities among employees. Everyone has different desires, being able to understand his or her desires by learning individual’s behavior is one of the potential key a leader should have. After understanding each and every employee’s desires, matching the job structure and its benefit with employees’ values’ is also a concept in leadership requirements. More important, a leader needs to learn how to be responsive to every employee’s thoughts or concerns and take action immediately. Employees can show up to work every day but keeping them engaging and motivating to their work can be difficult. Everyone is more engaged when his or her ideas recognizes and contributes in the corporation. Lastly, learn how to evaluate and reward employees’ performance is a key to boost employee engagement; a good organization would conduct meetings to go over employees’ performance; either to give rewards or give feedbacks then set out goals to increase productivities, sales and reduce turnover.. Secondly, this class will let me collaborate in team presentation; it will help me develop and able to raise my ideas within the group. More important, the group collaboration will help to improve my responsiveness to the team and comprehend my responsibility contributing the team’s task. My personal hobby has been playing basketball for three years. The more I practice, the more I get to know it. In my opinion, basketball is not just a sport, it is a lifestyle. Except for a variety of techniques I have learned during regular practice such as shooting, dribbling, I also teach myself how to work in a team and it is what so-called Team spirits that basketball demands, etc... In term of techniques skills, I am really interested in jumping and performing a slam- dunk. No other sport than basketball that you can see a player jumping high off the ground, going around the back and through the legs, to slam dunk a ball through a round piece of metal attached to a glass bored ten feet off the ground. As you know, performing a slam dunk demand jumping skill . Not only can it helps basketball player be more effective in all-around game, it also enables them to get up above the rim and perform a dunk shot. For example, a player need to stand in the middle of the stadium to practice jumping higher and built lower leg muscles, calf muscles and feet. Basketball player needs to master jumping skill to perform the slam-dunk, which enables him to score under the right circumstance. If a basketball player performs a successful and perfect slam- dunk, all of the spectators will be excited. Also, he can take a great pride in himself . On the other hand, an unsuccessful slam dunk can cause a player a serious injury or maybe death because the pole and ring can collapse on the player's body. My memory in slam dunk when I was a sophomore in high school was the great experience that I have ever had. One time, my team had a very important match against another school. We were in the middle of the game and all of my teammates were locked by the rival players. So I dribbled and tried to turn on the heat of the game by a spectacular slam dunk. I dribbled through the center player and jumped as high as I could in the air. I brought the ball through my belly and extended my arm behind my body. When I reached the apex of my jumped, I spun my arm like a windmill and threw down the ball into the hoop like a boss. At the moment my feet touched the ground, all the spectators were clapping, cheering and screaming like I was a superstar. I felt the atmosphere being exploded by the crowd at that moment. Unfortunately, it was just one of the few shots of my entire team throughout the match and we didn't win the game. However, that was one of the best slam dunk I have ever done. The grand daddy for slam dunk is Bob Kurland whose legendary moment was “ spontaneous”. “The ball happened to be under the basket. I got it up and stuffed it in. What it was an unintentional accident. It wasn’t planned, just a spontaneous play in Philadelphia,” he said. Bob Kurland slam dunk inspired all the basketball today including me. I stopped playing basketball since I graduated from high school but this hobby has become a part of me. Going to college brought me such a huge responsibility so I could not have time to play my favorite sport. Overall, playing slam dunk to me was just enough to call “hobby”, not my future because I did not reach the physically standard to become a basketball player. In conclusion, I will keep practicing it whenever I have free time.
My English teacher used to tell me :"Learning a new language and get new personalities." Her word got in my left ear and almost went out in my right ear. Despite being ignoring what she said, her word makes sense to me. Learning English totally changed my personalities and my habits but was I really profoundly changed by it? Not until I came to the U.S to study abroad. I've been learning, discovering and speaking English ten times more when I stayed in Vietnam. My English self and Vietnamese self had become two different individuals. My Vietnamese self is friendly, social and talkative, meanwhile my English self is introverted and less confident. It might be because of the environment, the culture and the converser. Especially, when I write in English, my Vietnamese self is totally not there. The darkness overwhelms my literacy and slides my complex thoughts to limited vocabulary paths. It shapes my words to be so simple. Imagine my English writing just like when you your 76 grandpa is driving you on i95. Whenever, I write in Vietnamese, on the other hand, it's a different story. The feeling falls on my intension, leading to my emotional and logical poetry. In my opinion, bi-or multilingual people use their language in different purposes, in different domains of life with different people. Different contexts and domains create different impressions, attitudes and behaviors. For example, I have never requested a debit card in Vietnamese; I haven't apologized for hitting someone's car at night; I haven't do a research about "Hiraeth" which doesn't have a meaning in Vietnamese; I say my first words " Thank you" when someone opened the doors for me in English. I believe that I am constantly in the progress of changing and improving. Speaking and learning a new language is an excellent way to figure out what I really am and be the my appropriate individual in this world. The boy was struggling with those assignments cause the final is coming up. He took a break and realized that the library just has couple people left. Even the staffs starts packing their stuffs and cleaning the mess around the student area at 4:45 pm. It's Friday and the school will be closed shortly. He's been here at 11:05 right after he's done his Psychology class. His head still gets dizzy with those "Ego Defense Mechanism,Denial and Repression, Rationalizations,.." But he doesn't have time to think about it. He's been doing with his Math class and Spanish the whole time. It's not because he likes them. It's because the dues are coming up. I know the boy, he is one of my best friend since in Vietnam. It's good to see his hard working but it was weird at first like you see . He never can stay his ass at one place more than a 15 minutes before. He was active, good at communication and energetic. " We are young, we need to experience life before we got old" he said. But suddenly he changed when he came to the U.S. We both decided to go to study abroad together. It's good change to discover the world and experience the advance of the other better country. But he has changed a lot when he come here. He is less social because of school materials, less talk because the language barriers and become introverted . I suddenly thing about whether multilinguals have multiple personalities. Or that's a easiest way to deal with life far away from parents that to be trying our best to adopt with the new environment? Then I just realized that it's not about the answer that why he changed ? It's about trying and adopting the environment to get a better outcome. It's about that life gives us 10% what happen to us and 90% how we react to it. Then I know changing don't need reasons because of its better outcomes. " I'm done. Let's go to the Korean restaurant. I'll treat you asshole" We both smiled. My friend changed. I changed . The world changed. Have you ever heard about the True Colors test? It’s a model for understanding yourself and others based on your personality temperament. Luckily, I know I have an orange personality in my Psychology Class last semester. As an orange personality type, I have a hard time listening to others. The advantage for this type is that I would try to do it on my way or look for a new way to go for. However, there are some disadvantages for this type. Misunderstanding others can occur when I don’t listen to others such as not following the instruction properly and it can affect other people. In addition, this can leave negative impression on the speaker. This can be considered impolite and disrespectful. Some of the facts the results showed that I was not able to explain them myself was that my time management. I tense to put my act together at the right moment; I hardly try to finish my task before hand. There always has to be a motivation for me to act on something such as deadline and important events. Secondly, listening is something that the test was able to explain. For most of the time, I do listen to people when they talk. However, sometimes, I don’t take on what people say because I think that I can do something better. And sometimes, things don’t go as the way I plan but I have the experience from it and try to improve from it. Thirdly, same personality is something I cannot explain. I tense to hang out and get closed to people who share the same or similar interests as myself. I found that people who have similar interests could be easy to talk to and share feeling with rather people who have different interests and hobbies. After I got a result from the test, I found that most of them are true about myself. I am spontaneous which mean that I can act on almost any situation that needs my action right away. I take chances as I act and ready to take on the result of my actions. Secondly, I only have interest on people who have similar personalities to mine because they’re easy to share feeling with and easy to communicate with. Thirdly, I do not like working in the same routine, I try to make things different as I go and learn from the experiences. I find work that I enjoy most. Many English learners say that listening is more difficult than any other skills. But in my opinion, writing is the most difficult skill of learning English. Firstly, writing requires good grammar. A non-native person has to remember a large number of rules in structure which are quite different from their own language. Secondly, as we all know that people spend less time to write than to listen, to speak and even to read. Learners learning the language in their country are proved to read more than any other skills while learners learning overseas must listen to the language most of their time. In any cases, they spend little of their time for writing. It is clearly known that an average person spend the most for listening, the second most for speaking, then reading and finally writing. Thirdly, when students of English as a foreign language write something, they have a big question in mind whether what they write is correct or incorrect. Who can answer the question for them and help them recognize the mistakes. It is, in many cases, the teacher who is teaching them and is ready to give them a hand. The problem however I want to mention is that the teacher does not have enough time to correct for all of them if there are more than ten students in the class. When the teacher corrects the writing for just some of them, the other students cannot recognize their own mistakes. Without correction, the mistakes may be repeated many times and become bad habits which are hard to adjust. In conclusion, writing is the most difficult skill that learners of any foreign languages may face. It takes a specific of time to improve and understand all of the aspect of it. To be good at it, learners must give much effort. |
